Why You Should Unfollow Your Ex
My generation is all kinds of fucked up and I'm full of unpopular opinions.
One of these is that you should always unfollow an ex on everything.
I think Instagram has ushered in a new era of social politics. One that's like "nooo I can't unfollow someone because then they'll think I hate them".
And that's why I think we're the generation that has the most trouble moving on.
In the past, when you broke up with someone you'd literally never have to see them again, except for photographs or maybe running into them someplace.
You wouldn't hang onto their old photos, their new stories. Things they're listening to, doing, people they're seeing.
And you'd move on.
Now, you never allow yourself the ability to fully disconnect and disengage through this thread you hold. Of course, sometimes we want to hold on, that's why we stay there, but if you then wonder why moving on doesn't get any easier then you have your answer.
You may think that unfollowing or blocking means that you hate a person, when really it should mean that they are just no longer in your life. And you are setting a boundary.
Unfollowing doesn't mean you're on bad terms, it just means that you don't want to be watching someone's life forever.
Some people follow their exes cus they're "still friends" which I understand, but am also of the belief that you can be amicable with people without having to be in constant pseudo-contact with them.
We all need to learn how to move on.
Selfishly, I also hate when people don't unfollow their exes, cus then I don't know if someone is single or not. And well, bummer.
I don't want to detail all the psychosocial theory I've developed of our online interactions, but this one weighs pretty heavy.
I've been sitting on floors with friends who still watch their exes follower count, if he's seeing their story, why he suddenly started posting more, and I've seen it pain them over and over.
And listen, honestly, the pain doesn't really get any better just because you're not following an ex, but it helps a lot in the long run.
That's just my input for today. Hope this helps. Xx
